Xinyi Liao spent her entire life in pursuit of knowledge. While her aristocratic parents chased power and fame in the newly formed Xin-Beijing after the war, Xinyi immersed herself in the sciences, delving deeper than any of her peers across multiple disciplines. Biophysiology, organic chemistry, ecogeology... she explored and mastered them all to the theoretical frontier. Yet her greatest passion lay in theoretical physics, to which she had devoted herself as a teenager, vehemently challenging her teachers’ dogma whenever she believed them to be wrong.


Because of her unwavering devotion to scientific theory and method, she found it difficult to connect with most people. Conversations with her were often brief - others were fortunate to get more than three words from her if the topic strayed beyond science. She shunned social and physical activities alike, choosing instead to spend every spare moment solving the next equation in the library.


Once, at fifteen, already pursuing two physics degrees alongside a master’s in mathematics, she became so engrossed in a mathematical problem that she neglected to eat. A librarian found her on the verge of collapsing from hypoglycaemia and offered her a lollipop. From that day on, she was never seen without one nestled in her hand or tucked between her lips.


By the age of twenty-eight, Xinyi had earned eight PhDs and went on to astonish the scientific world by receiving two Nobel Prizes in Physics before turning forty. While most would have slowed down to teach, mentor, or celebrate such achievements, Xinyi simply moved on to the next unanswered question. For all her brilliance, she could not accept that the universe’s two great pillars - quantum mechanics and spacetime relativity - remained fundamentally ununified. That became her new obsession.


During her tenure at the prestigious Peking University, she began developing a radical hypothesis: the existence of a fifth dimension she named the Aetherion Field. The academic world initially welcomed the theory with curiosity. But when the Nobel laureate proposed using modified particle colliders to generate torsion fields, curiosity quickly turned to outrage. Polite debate and measured criticism gave way to outright cynicism, not only from fellow physicists but also from ethics committees and engineers who condemned her willingness to pursue such dangerous experiments.


Her fall from grace was swift. As colleagues denounced her theories and scientific journals refused to publish her research, Peking University reluctantly concluded that it could no longer risk its reputation. The institution terminated the tenure of its most decorated academic.


Branded a pariah by the scientific establishment, Xinyi refused to yield. Instead, she doubled down on her work, exhausting her savings and Nobel Prize money to build the world’s first tabletop collider alongside a digital twin for simulation and modelling. She continued publishing her research on Dawnbreakers, a crowdsourced research platform on the mesh funded by mysterious benefactors who still believed in her. Over the next two decades, she worked in near-total solitude, assembling the pieces of a single equation she believed could unify all of science - one she called the Aetherion Field Equation (AFE) - testing and retesting every possibility in her relentless pursuit of the extradimensional truth.
